Have you ever placed your faith in a Sat Nav only for it to direct you down a one-way streets or a dead end? If you tire of driving downtown looking for that impossible-to-find ‘To Let’ property, aided only by a voice that sounds like Lara Croft’s robotic twin, then perhaps you’d prefer the GPS feature in Fuel. In Fuel, there are no urban labyrinths or rush hour traffic. Just miles and miles of open terrain. Needless to say, you might need to find the quickest route from Point A to Point B if you want to meet up with your online friends for a head-to-head race. The GPS feature in Fuel is an intuitive visual cue which comes in the form of on-screen overhead arrows, calculated in real time, directing you over the game world’s terrain and down the nearest highway. It might seem similar to Perfect Dark Zero’s intrusive guidance system, and a feature that hinders exploration in a game like Fuel which otherwise actively encourages it could be a bad choice. But the system is entirely optional, and when you want to swap your free-roaming urge for adventure with high octane racing, the GPS seems like a handy gameplay feature for quickly getting you where you want to go, and getting you what you want.
