Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Preview
Beenox (latest dev to take on Spider-Man licence) have finally broken the mould of recycled Spider-Man games in sandbox New York. This new title presents us with a promising game that involves 4 different Spider-Man universes.
The gaming environment is now more confined and level based, with enough space for Spider-Man to flow. Before you read on watch this exciting opening trailer, of Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions.
The plot is quite simple Amazing Spider-Man accidently, shatters the tablet of order and chaos during a scuffle with Mysterio. Now shattered into pieces the universe is in danger, any villain with the tablet is a threat.
Spider-Man must now obtain every single piece from 4 different dimensions, with the help of other Spider-Men. The dimensions that are featured in the game are the amazing universe, noire universe, 2099 universe and the ultimate universe.
Each universe has a distinctive art style and gameplay mechanics. The amazing universe has Spider-Man wearing the famous red and blue suit. The combats main emphasis is web based attacks e.g. a huge hammer formed from Spider-Mans web. The amazing universe takes place in a jungle which is kraven’s lair.
Unwillingly Spider-Man is kidnapped and placed in the jungle by Kraven, who has a piece of the tablet. Any villain that holds the tablet is granted with enhanced speed, strength and agility. A gameplay mechanic that every universe has is first person battle sequences, with bosses up close.

The noire universe is all about sticking to the shadows and snatching enemies into the dark. Spider-Man dons a 1930’s pilot goggles and some slick threads. The gameplay mechanics here are mainly about stealth, all the levels are at night.
Outside environments have firework displays in the background. Once lit everything brightens up, giving away your position to enemies. Guns have a major advantage over Spider-Man and will kill him very easily in this universe.
Next is the infamous futuristic Spider-Man from the 2099 universe. The Spider-Man of the future is all about aerial attacks and has an ability to slow down everything around him except himself.
Last but not least is the ultimate universe where Spider-Man wears the symbiote suit. Comic book fans will be quick to spot that Ultimate Spider-Man, usually wears the red and blue suit. The change is thought to be a design decision, as 2 worlds with the same suit would be boring.
The symbiote suit actually has gameplay implications that are used specifically in combat. You can use the symbiote suit to whip enemies and even plunge spikes into the ground to cover more distance.
Each dimension has roughly 3 missions to complete, so you can expect 12 levels to play in total. The story sounds very linear but the varied gameplay mechanics make up for it.

To mix things up every dimensions Spider-Man has a voice actor, one of them being the famous voice from the 1994 -1998 animated series Christopher Daniel Barnes.
The plot seems similar to the last few episodes of the animated series back in 1994. Difference being there was no tablet and more Spider-Men from alternate Universes. Overall though I like what Beenox has done with the storyline translating it into a video game.
The old wall crawler will be swinging to a console (Sony PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Wii) near you on 10th September 2010.
