BAFTA Video Games Awards 2009

Here are the results from the BAFTA video games awards 2009:

Game play: Call of Duty 4
Casual: Boom Blox
Sports: Race Driver: Grid
Story and Character: Call of Duty 4
Strategy: Civilisation Revolution
Best use of Audio: Dead Space
New Talent: Boro Toro
Multi-player: Left 4 Dead
Best Technical Achievement: Spore
Original Score: Dead Space
Hand held: Professor Layton and the Curious Village
People's Choice: Call of Duty 4
Artistic Achievement: Little Big Planet
Best Action and Adventure: Fable II
Best Game: Super Mario Galaxy

As expected, the spectacular Call of Duty 4 was way out in front with three awards in the game play, story and character and peoples choice. The strangest omission from the awards list has to be Rock Stars Grand Theft Auto IV. Despite being nominated in seven awards categories, the title failed to win a single award which is a mind blowing decision in my opinion. I'm stunned each and every time I play GTA IV.
GRID winning the sports category is a no brainer, a truly stunning racing sim that surely is now the benchmark for any racing game in the future.

But these contests are all about opinions, so were the winners correct? Was GTA IV harshly done by? It'll be interesting to find out.

A+ (1up), 10/10 (edge) 10/10 (eurogamer) 10/10 (game informer) 10/10 (gamespot) 10/10 (IGN) 10/10 (Official plastation magazine US) 10/10 (official xbox magazine) 20/20 (PSM3) - as you say it's a bit of an odd one that a game that received so many full marks by the reviewers (many of them being the first time full marks were awarded to a game in this generation) left empty handed. GTA 4 is without doubt an exceptional game and ground breaking in many ways but must not have ticked all the boxes for the judges. It would be good to know exactly where they felt this game fell short of the mark in each of the 7 categories.
