Could Legendary Deliver a Legendary First-Person Shooter?

Tag: Game Reviews, Microsoft

From Griffins to Minotaur’s and Werewolves, this game is far from the stuff of legends. You are Jack; Jack Deckard a professional thief who is pretty much forced to play the “good-guy.” He was paid very well to break into a museum to steal Pandora’s Box, which was found by scientist. I honestly forget the guys name who is the main “bad-guy” that paid Deckard to steal the box because the depth of the characters was very shallow. I understand where they were going with the whole finding out more about the characters as you go. However, you do not get great dialogue through the game to help the story out. Anyway, Deckard touches the box, which leaves a mark on his hand, which gives him a sort of Jedi Force push power with it. As powerful Pandora’s Box displayed by bringing out mythical creatures, why was the only thing Deckard could do with his hand was to push things back?

Ok, I displayed some of my frustrations with this game that is loaded with potential. One thing is the controls are just lackluster. In addition, it gets a little repetitive fighting the same monsters repeatedly. They also do not mix up the monster battles. There were its good points. The weaponry was decent, nothing too powerful or too weak to have an ok balance against enemies. The griffin battles could have been more creative, I mean they fly so why are you fighting them on the ground trying to strafe left and right to dodge them. There were times you had to use a Rocket Launcher to blast Griffins out of the air, which was cool. Then the battle with the Kraken was ok mainly just using Rocket Launchers to shoot the tentacles. It could have been better. The final challenge definitely did not live up to the game title. The first part as you are trying to reach the top of a tall building was challenging. A bunch of the “main bad-guy” soldiers outside the building and then inside fighting two Minotaur’s at the same time tough. Therefore, you would expect the rest of the way to be ridiculously challenging to make an epic finish. I was wrong and I will not spoil the rest for those who have not played the game.

The potential this game displayed gives me hope for the sequel. I believe there will be one due to twist in the story and how the game concluded. There are things they should shoot for in the sequel that would have made this a solid game. Balance in game play and challenges. Do you want enemies to be challenging with more variety or environments to have a bit of a challenge, since at some parts you are working thru wreckage in New York? I did like the idea of totally changing continents to battle through as part of the story. An improved AI would give more balance at certain parts of the game. Sometimes it was just too easy to know what a werewolf would do and how fast you need to pump them with lead before they get too close. The same could for the soldiers; you just wait until the show themselves from their cover to shoot them. What could have added some more depth are some air battles with some Griffins or even the Golem to shake things up a bit. I think they wanted to throw the idea of a story like this to draw interest. I believe it did but it left people wanting more.

I say the creators of Legendary make some big game play changes and you have a smash hit. Maybe use the Unreal Engine to do wonders with the graphics and AI. I was interested enough in the game to fully complete it. I normally would not do that if the game were just boring or did not strike my interest enough. I mean come on I’ve played through Halo multiple times, Gears of War, some Call Of Duty, and other first-person shooters. I guess Legendary is only the beginning of the legend of Deckard in the modern days fighting mythical creatures. Is Deckard the legend or the creatures in modern day times the legend? I could not tell you because the story wasn’t deep enough to reveal that.

Haha, sequel? I doubt that. The sales for the game were abysmal, not to mention it fell short of all and any promises the game was supposed to deliver. It was rushed for the holiday season and many glitches and bugs were left unfixed.

Timmy Nuts out.
