Blood Bowl

Fresh on the heels of the success of the Dawn of War series, Battle March and a whole host of other RTS games from the Games Workshop comes yet another conversion from tabletop to video game; Blood Bowl.

As I have said in past blogs, I grew up on a diet of the Games Workshop universes and played a whole host of tabletop games. Back then however, the video game technology didn't allow smooth transition from tabletop miniatures to pixelated sprites and some of the releases weren't quite as smooth as they are today; some examples were Space Crusade on the ZX Spectrum and more recently Space Hulk on the Playstation1.

But it seems with the technology coming on in leaps and bounds these days, more tabletop games are finding themselves converted to the world of video gaming. With the development of Blood Bowl however, the game just got a little stranger. Most Games Workshop conversions have been RTS, although Fire Warrior was a neat little FPS for the PS2, but Blood Bowl is a fantasy version of .......American Football. Nice. In 1994 my mates and I were addicted to the tabletop version of Blood Bowl with our own league running for many months. Never did I imagine that I would be playing the game on a PC one day.

A brief lowdown; the game is played between four races – Humans, Orcs, Dwarves and Lizardmen (It was the forces of Chaos in the original game but the Lizardmen are now a predominant force in the Warhammer universe) and is basically fantasy meets American football with passing, blitzing, tackling, touchdowns etc with the added bonus of magic, fantasy races and brutally unremitting violence where its not unusual to lose a team member or two through death. It was wholly fun to play and I hope this sense of entertainment is evident in the video game version.
